ASSESSMENT OF ZIKA AND OTHER NEURODEVELOPMENT DISABILITY SYSTEMS OF CARE IN THE PACIFIC BASIN

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 31 health professionals from American Samoa, Guam, and CNMI. They completed an adapted version of the Assessment of Chronic Illness Care 3.5 (ACIC), which is based on the chronic care model. The overall mean program score was calculated to determine the level of support for ZIKV and NRD care ranging from limited support (0-2) to fully developed support for care (9-11). Results showed an overall program score of 4.03 for basic support for Zika Virus and other NRD care

CALIFORNIA MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING NETWORK

The California Maternal and Child Health Leadership Training Network (CAMCHLTN - camchltn.org) is a coalition of the state's 14 Maternal and Child Health training programs. The network seeks to foster effective statewide communication to promote research, advocacy, and professional development.  This calendar year, we had conducted 3 liaison conferences and have made progress with regards to the network's infrastructure.  We are currently evaluating possible advocacy opportunities in conjunction with the Surgeon General of California as a part of the network's focus next fiscal year.

PROGRAM EVALUATION OF HABLAMOS JUNTOS - AN EARLY CHILD LANGUAGE AND LITERACY INITIATIVE

To address the large burden of child language delay and the poor access to early intervention services in our patient population, Hablamos Juntos provides parent education courses to teach parent’s the knowledge and skills needed to stimulate their child’s language development. An IRB proposal was created to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of this program. We hypothesize that implementing the parent-directed child language intervention program, Hablamos Juntos / Talking Together, in a pediatric federally qualified health center (FQHC) primary care setting will: 1. Improve parent’s ability to support their child’s language development 2. Improve the language development trajectory of the parent’s child 3. Be feasible to implement, and is an acceptable primary care clinic service to parents

FAMILY CENTER CARE CONSULTATION

Family Center Care Consultation is a pilot where as a Family Support fellow, I meet with multidisciplinary fellow trainers and I review their Project Leadership, in order to provide to their Project the family perspective. As family support fellows, we provide resources in our consultations that the teams can explore and use in their projects, as a way to fully integrated the family perspective. We advise them in regards of the concepts of Family Center Care.

MAKING HEALTH A PRIORITY FOR INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE

A collaborative policy brief with First 5 Los Angeles providing policy makers with a more thorough understanding of the unique needs of foster care children and offer recommendations to improve the health and well-being of a population of children who are at greater risk of experiencing significant health problems and comorbidities, including adverse childhood experiences before, during, and after their foster care placement. The brief Integrates current research and perspectives from a range of professionals to provide a deeper and more expanded understanding of the challenges facing this population in order to address and improve the health of youth and infants in foster care.

COMBINING SENSORY INTEGRATION WITH OTHER APPROACHES IN MENTAL HEALTH

The primary product was the creation of a synthesis matrix of relevant literature used to inform concepts and case studies in a textbook chapter about the combination of sensory integration and mental health intervention approaches in clinical practice. The anticipated audience of the textbook chapter includes occupational therapists and practitioners from other disciplines, such as physical therapists and speech language pathologists. Other related deliverables included presentations at regional and international conference presentations on clinical case applications of concepts in the textbook chapter.

THE EFFECT OF EXERCISE AND MOTOR INTERVENTIONS FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA (ALL): A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most prevalent cancer among children and adolescents in the United States, representing 20% of all childhood cancers.  Children with ALL experience deficits in flexibility, strength, endurance, function, and participation both during and after medical intervention for ALL. The purpose of this leadership project is to publish a systematic review evaluating the effect of exercise and motor interventions on motor outcomes of children with ALL. Manuscript will be submitted in 2019.

NUTRITIONAL STATUS IN CHILDREN WITH SPINA BIFIDA

The project, "Nutritional Status of Children with Spina Bifida," is a study expecting to extract and code data from patient charts from the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ Spina Bifida clinic between 1995 to 2005. Findings from a review of the literature conducted to identify current knowledge on this topic led to the development of a manuscript. This manuscript will be published in Nutrition Focus, an online newsletter focused on nutrition challenges of children with special health care needs and their families.

DEVELOPMENT OF A PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Development of a Clinical Fellowship Training Program in Hospital and Special Care Pediatric Dentistry at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. This fellowship program is aimed at pediatric dentists who would like to expand their training in the areas of hospital dentistry, treating children with special health care needs including craniofacial anomalies. Training also include leadership education in neurodevelopmental and related disabilities, as well academic teaching and research.

QUALITATIVE STUDY OF EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND FOSTER CAREGIVERS

In this study, we will retrospectively examine charts of approximately 200 foster children previously evaluated in a Foster Care HUB associated with a large children's hospital network to determine how commonly the problem of educational rights for foster caregivers results in negative impacts for children within the foster care system. Charts will be reviewed to elucidate information pertaining to seven domains: caregiver type at time of appointment, whether foster parents or biological parents retained educational rights, the presence of special healthcare needs, the impact of any existing medical condition on the child's education, whether the child has an existing IEP, whether the child is served through the Regional Center, as well as including all systems of care involved in the child's case at the time of the appointment. This information will be used in order to help us answer these two questions:Does caregiver type adversely impact access to special education in this vulnerable population? Are foster children's health outcomes adversely impacted when foster caregivers do not obtain educational rights?

Service Subitle

Our leadership project final product is a publishable systematic review. Our systematic review has synthesized literature about the efficacy of motor interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder. Motor interventions include aquatic therapy, horse riding interventions, exergaming, physical education, and motor skill interventions. This review found limited evidence for the efficacy of motor intervention to improve motor skills of children with ASD.  Further high-quality research is needed on this topic.

Most of our efforts pertaining to this program involve studying new approaches and developing innovative ways to implement them. We evaluate our success in this field by gathering qualitative and quantitative data, and using that information to measure shifts and changes from our baseline measurements.
